Independence Day, kinda

Its the 4th of July and I’m conflicted about everything… as ever.

I’ve never questioned Independence Day before this year. Everyone has there own opinion on what is going on in the world right with #BLM, Coronavirus, and that 45th president isn’t making the best decsions for the country as a whole. I can already tell that in the last few months that my perspective is widening and constantly changing which I think is anything but negative.

Before all I knew about July 4th was that Britain gave up on fighting the United States so we celebrate that. I am now educating myself and have learned that the only people that really gained anything from this independence was white men. White women didn’t get the right to vote till 1920. and that’s just white woman, other ethnicities could not vote till decades later. Aisan women could not vote till 1952, Native American women were not granted the ability to vote in all states until 1957, and most African American women could not vote till 1965. That you could not vote based on your race and because you were not born a man… are you kidding me. Why is the government so ignorant? Or is the government that greedy and afraid?

What really frustrated me today was that no-one in my currant inner quarantine circle cared that much. I get it, my Aunt was complaining about not making other plans or inviting her other friends over for 4th of July dinner that she arranged. I say other people because my Dad has a compromised immune system and he is very careful not to interact with too many people. My Mom says, “Dad can not get sick from Covid or we all will suffer.” Idk why this bothered me, maybe the fact that my Aunt was complaining just to complain.

My Aunt is lucky, I’m so lucky and she just can’t seem to look past that your really not supposed to see that many people, especially without wearing a mask…. I’m just freaked out at this point. like hello coronavirus is still a relevant thing. One thing that was cool today is that I FaceTimed a couple friends and they mentioned they felt similarly. This year they are taking a harder look at what “ Independence Day” really stands for.

Anyway hope your safe, hope your wearing a mask, and I hope everybody in your life including you are doing ok <33
