Living in the past

When you live in the past it’s hard to live in the present. Let’s talk about it.

I find it easy to replay the past over and over again in my head. What would I have done differently? Why did they react that way? Did I do the right thing?

The main problem when living in the past is you can’t change any of it. The only thing you can do is be present and hopefully learn from your past experiences in the now of life. Wasting energy and time thinking about what could have happened or what will happen in the future. We all make mistakes. If you think about it you learn way more from your mistakes than you do from your successes. Mistakes are part of life… I get it. One aspect of my life I’m trying to get better at is only having to make big mistakes once. To pay attention to how I’m feeling in the situation and be more aware of my surroundings. I think part of making mistakes has to do with getting to know yourself better too.

For my life, many changes can happen so quickly, especially in high school. Your friend circles can change, what activities during a season can change, what you want your style to be can change. Something even if it was small can create a different change in your outlook. Maybe it’s learning something new about yourself, others, or the world around you. Whatever it may be… looking to the past for more than the moment, will only drag you away from the present.

Focusing on the present is why I try and set goals for myself. I find trying new things helps me focus on the now and the future things I want to be doing. Focusing on the present for me also means not being on social media all the time or having social media breaks as a breather from others’ lives.
