Its ok to have a Mental Health Day

When I say mental health day or hour or week, it means a lot of things for me.

This could be taking a break from social media to taking a break from negative people in your life.

I’m aware there’s a lot of controversy about the #BLM movement and even being able to take a break is a huge privilege in of it’s self, to that I 100% agree with. I can turn off my phone but others can’t turn off the color of there skin to not be persecuted.

But the thing is I get overwhelmed sometimes with so much information coming at me at once and I feel guilty in a way. I also like to research because there is so much misleading stuff. The criminal justice system is so messed up but I did not educate myself before the BLM movement on how inherently racist the system can be. As Americans we are taught in school about all the good things the founding fathers did. But we never learned how President Thomas Jefferson was a slave owner, and that he raped and fathered a child from one of his slaves in the very house on the tales of are .05 cent nickel. I never learned that in history class.

Racism has been built on the backs of America. The United States would not have been a wealthy country without free labor. At one point it was slaves, and today it’s people in private prison’s doing labor. I really feel for people that are/ or have been in prison when it isn’t always their fault. The documentaries I have seen about experience’s inside prison are brutal to say the least. There are so many different kinds of prisons to like white collar crime prisons to private prisons. I recently learned about the school to prison pipeline, and can totally see why we have such problems. This is a new subject schools are now teaching which I think is a good thing.

So now…. what can we do? I think just learning, educating, to understand the best you can is a start.
